This large black and white printed tin, 95mm diameter and 23mm deep, was manufactured between 1936 and 1989 by Carr & Day & Martin Ltd at their Great Dunmow factory in Essex. The 1880 date harks back to when John T. Dales started his business, not the more usual date of 1770 for the CDM business.

This large brown and white printed tin with butterfly opener, 95mm diameter and 23mm deep, was manufactured at the earliest 1976 and latest 1989 (more likely mid to late 1980’s) by Carr & Day & Martin Ltd at their Great Dunmow factory in Essex. The date date has been changed from 1880 to 1770 – referring to Day & Martin, reference to John T Dales now lost. The tin sports the early eight digit bar code as well as the European ” ℮ ” average weight/volume mark.

This 7cm diameter 50ml “press to open” tin printed simply in black and white was manufactured by Carr & Day & Martin in the last days of manufacturing shoe care products. The possessive proper noun of Dales having been written as Dales’ since 1880 have now been simplified to plain Dales, thereby losing its heritage and so alludes, perhaps, to hillside walking and hiking type of activities where, realistically, the dubbin market now lay.
The Carr business had always manufactured dubbin and the Carr & Day & Martin company produced utilitarian packaged dubbin for the war department in WWII (and probably well before that from 1923 onwards) but following the winding up of John T. Dales’ dubbin business in 1947 C&D&M took on the John T. Dales brand name, trade mark and packaging and carried on where Dales’ left off. Coincidentally, the founder of the Carrs business was John Dale Carr.
